Food Prep for Travel: Essential Tips for Adventurous Families

So, you’ve got your vehicle ready, your water filter packed, but when you’re preparing to travel to remote areas, it’s also important to think about your food supply. Whether you’re camping or going on a long hike, food is a crucial part of your gear.
Calorie Needs While Traveling
An average man needs about 2,500 calories per day, while a woman consumes around 2,000 calories. Teenagers need between 1,600 and 2,000 calories. These needs are based on a normal day, so without hiking and playing and worrying. For a family of four — a man, a woman and two children aged 9 and 12 — you calculate as follows:
- Man: 2,500 kcal
- Woman: 2,000 kcal
- Child 9 years: 1,600 kcal
- Child 12 years: 2,000 kcal
Total per day: 8,100 calories.
So for a week away you need at least 56,700 calories. This seems a lot, but it is certainly not impossible! :D
Since we don't want to live on just chips, Oreos and candy, we also need some healthy variations.
- 5 kg potatoes: 4,400 kcal
- 2 kg beef: 4,500 kcal
- 2 kg fish: 4,400 kcal
- 1 kg pork: 1,650 kcal
- 2 kg chicken: 2,800 kcal
- 2 kg rice: 2,400 kcal

So far we have selected 40,850 kcal of food. We can already see that it is becoming quite a lot. Is. That is why it is important to think carefully about the needs of the traveling group.
Food preservation and storage
The first few days you can enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables, but this can quickly become a challenge. With a refrigerator or freezer you can extend the shelf life by a few days. Then consider using:
- Canned food: Choose cans over glass because when the can is empty it is easy to crush and take home. We never leave any waste in nature.
- Dehydrated food: This is ideal for adventurous expeditions. Dehydrated food is light and compact because the moisture has been removed using a special dehydrator. With a little boiling water, it is ready to use in a few minutes. In addition, freeze-dried food has a shelf life of 4 to 5 years, making it perfect as an emergency supply.
