Indispensable for a good off-road meal

What are the absolute must-haves for a good off-road meal?

It was a long, awesome offroad ride today and with the rising hunger we were longing for a good offroad meal. After a long beautiful ride it is time to set up camp. It is later than planned, we are tired and it is already getting dark. We have not seen a shop for a few days. We hope that our gas bottle will still puff out a bit for a good meal that we are longing for. And what do you think?
He takes his last breath and there we are. No fried steak tonight. At most some raw vegetables and a crushed cereal bar that has found its way under all the junk somewhere.

Unless….

If you have ever experienced the above scenario, it will not happen to you twice. So now we were really prepared and got our weapons out. We looked for some thick dry branches on the ground and sawed them into smaller pieces. We split some pieces of wood with our Fiskars axe into nice kindling and we put them ready in our homemade fire pit. A few firelighters for convenience and our magnesium fire starter and the fire was a fact. The grain bar could go straight back between the rubbish and we were a bit happier. We were ready for a really good offroad meal.

We looked for 3 branches and stuck them in our tripod ring. The Dutch oven could be hung up. A good steak and the butter were taken from the fridge freezer and life was good. We plopped down nicely in our sturdy camping chairs with a nice cold beer. We had light, warmth and a well-filled stomach. What more could you want.

Maybe you are more of a back to basic kind of person and my story sounds a bit exaggerated with our fridge freezer. Maybe you were super enthusiastic about the crushed cereal bar. But we think it is ideal that if we do not encounter any civilization for a few days, we can fill the freezer and fridge and also just eat fresh vegetables and fruit. A hiking holiday is a different story and then packets and bags are a great solution for a lightweight food supply. But when we are on the road with our 4x4 monster, we make it a bit more luxurious. Because we can.

Don't forget

We often pack the Dutch oven, the axe , firelighters and magnesium fire starter with great enthusiasm. Completely ready to go, we think. Once we have set up camp and started the fire, we look at each other wondering where the butter or cooking oil has gone. And 9 times out of 10 we have forgotten it and we have trouble not letting the vegetables burn on the pan and we cannot give the pan the greasy care it needs so well.

The essentials

For a good off-road meal, we think there is nothing better than cooking on a fire after a long off-road ride. We prepare all kinds of delicious Dutch oven recipes on it and the warmth of the fire allows us to enjoy long evenings outside. In order to prepare the fresh Dutch oven recipes, we have the fridge-freezer combination so that we are not dependent on a supermarket nearby. Don't forget to put a block of butter in it! The axe prevents you from having to fill your entire car with a supply of wood. The magnesium fire starter ensures that we always get the fire going, even if we accidentally leave the starter in the rain overnight, and the firelighters make it super easy to light the campfire.

If you end a long off-road day like this, you will be ready to go again the next day!

Tip: if you are considering a cool off-road trip to Iceland for example where there is not a branch to be found between all the lava rock, you will be disappointed with your gas bottle that you left at home and your currently useless saw and axe . Gas bottles and a bag of coal are a godsend. You can also cook deliciously on the coals and they continue to radiate heat for a very long time, which you can use well in a country like Iceland!
